Meaning Of Depression or mental stress?

In layman words, depression is one common name for mood disorder which can be described as feelings of loss, helplessness, anger, sudden bouts of laughter, crying all of a sudden, sadness, which disrupts a person's everyday life.

It is becoming so common these days that people have started taking depression for granted. May be, now we have been conditioned in a way that we have started looking these mental stress or depression as part of modern lifestyle.

Depression can be felt in different ways. It may result in lower productivity, affecting daily routine works. It is not that mental stress hits us just at psychological level but it may turn into some chronic health conditions also.


Some of the disease that can get worse because of depression may include Asthma, Arthritis, Cancer, Diabetes, Heart related diseases, Obesity.

But, at the same time, it becomes very important to realize that getting emotional or feeling low at times is completely normal whenever some upsetting events happen in our lives. Reasons could be many. But, if you are feeling hopeless or low on a regular basis, then chances are that you could be dealing with mental stress / anxiety / depression. And, depression can get worse if ignored and not addressed with proper treatment. Keep one thing very clear that seeking help for depression is never a sign of weakness but a living proof that you value your mental and physical health of your body, as you are aware that your body, your life is the greatest gift that you have been endowed by the nature.

If you go through various studies done in communities of different parts of the world where infection rate of Corona were higher, it was evident that frontline workers, nurses, healthcare workers have shown higher levels of depression.


And, it is not true that everyone is feeling low because of lockdown as a preventive measure to stop the community spread of Corona. For many of the Indian families, it has given them a wonderful time to spend with their family members without much stress of normal days of jobs, schooling, traffic and mundane worries. This lockdown has obviously strengthened the family bonds and quality of life. It has made us realize that nothing is more important than family love and strength. They were so many things that we were busy with just to show off or may be, we were in a rat race of being judged of not being up to date because of peer, colleagues pressure.

But, then there is the opposite side of the coin as well. For people who don't like interacting much with their family members are left  in a situation where verbal abuses are getting common because of being locked in their homes for such a long lockdown.

Many other factors aggravate the depression and stress level of any individual in this pandemic.

  1. Take care of our body by doing yoga, do some physical stretch exercises regularly or simply meditate for few minutes each day. Get into the routine of eating healthy and well balanced diets. Last but not the least, which is my favorite stress buster of all time, get lots of sleep but of-course  never over do it as may lead to body pain, headache.
  2. Talk to family members about how you are feeling and also share things that may be bothering you for a while.
  3. You can stay connected with your friends, colleagues, and people who makes you feel worthy, are a must to connect with, in such pandemic situation overall. While maintaining social distancing, stay connected with them through voice calls, video calls, social media.
  4. You can do it yourself and also suggest people who are not present on social media or online platforms that they can unwind themselves in activities which they love doing, like indoor gardening, painting, sketching, singing, dancing.
  5. Learn new hobbies which you always wanted to learn but you were not able to do because of time constraints .
  6. Go on news-fasting by taking break from reading, listening or watching news repeatedly about the COVID-19 pandemic can be stressful.
  7. Take good care of your mental health and your overall health in general. Seek consultancy of a health professional before you start self-treatment for COVID-19 based on whatsapp university knowledge.
  8. Stick close to your normal daily routine as you used to do in pre-quarantine days. Wake up and sleep at the same time that you used to do before, adapt some exercise habits, eat meals on time, do the laundry on days that you were doing before corona pandemic. The main reason for this point is that it not only keeps you active and less lethargic but also it would be much easier once we get back to normal lifestyle that we used to have before COVID-19.
  9. Keep your home clean, well organized. Such clutters around you, might be one of the reason of being not so productive. This will help you sooth your mind.
  10. Last point would be instead of feeling "I am getting bored or stuck", try re-framing such thoughts to "now, I can finally focus on my personal life and give more time to myself".
We all are in it together and we all will come out of this together.
